Demand Continues to Grow for Medical Estheticians

While it is not a new concept, medical esthetics is fast becoming a career that is in demand. As far back as 2003 treatments such as laser hair removal have been available, however the price was steep. These days the costs have come down making these types of services available to a wider economic group. It is now more than a $9 billion industry and technicians are in high demand.

Medical estheticians perform a variety of treatments. Some of the most common are:

Laser hair removal – This is one of the most common procedures which uses light to remove hair by beaming into the follicle.

Cellulite reduction – There are a variety of laser and ultrasound treatment option to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Photo rejuvenation – This skin treatment uses light, lasers or photodynamic therapy to improve the skin by reducing spots, wrinkles or improving the texture.

Microneedling – This process uses an electric device with tiny needles to stimulate cell production and which increases collagen and elastin, giving the skin a younger feel and look.

Body contouring – Body contouring is most commonly used to contour and tighten sagging skin in people who have had a large weight loss.

Chemical and mechanical exfoliation – Microdermabrasion is a common form of mechanical exfoliation and helps improve the texture of the skin. There are a wide variety of chemical peels that aim for the same results.

This is a sampling of the variety of procedures that a medical esthetician will learn before working at a spa or medical clinic. Technical schools across the country offer programs for technicians to learn the art of medical esthetics. Programs typically include anatomy and physiology coursework, which will ensure the technician understands the best treatment options for each individual. Hands-on experience is also part of most programs, ensuring graduates are ready to step into a patient setting. This growing field can generate a solid income level and a successful long-term career.
