Famed esthetician Shani Darden caters to such celebrities as Emma Stone, Chrissy Teigen, and Jessica Alba. And fortunately she has advice for the rest of us! Darden discussed five skincare myths and provides great advice that you can give your clients:

Wear Sunscreen Even if It’s Cloudy Outside. Even if it’s cloudy, the sun is sending out damaging UV rays that can age your skin and cause cancer. Thus, it is vitally important that you wear sunscreen all of the time. Also, what most people don’t know is that you can get UV rays from light bulbs, too. So even if you are inside, you should protect your face and arms with sunscreen. She recommends that you use SPF 30 everyday.

Don’t Get a Tan to Clear up Acne. Darden really frowns on tanning, because of the permanent damage it can do to your skin. Doing this can cause pigmentation and scarring. If you want to prevent acne, you are much better off using the proper products for your skin type.

Oily Skin Needs Moisturizers Too. Even if your skin is oily, you should be using a moisturizer. Just be sure and choose one that won’t clog your pores.

Don’t Exfoliate Every Day. While many people think that they should exfoliate every day, Darden says this is a mistake. She says that your skin will never get that glow if you do this. Darden recommends that you exfoliate once or twice a week at most. If you do it too often, you risk stripping your skin, which can lead to discoloration.

Use Retinol to Get Rid of Acne Scars. While many people think that lasers are their only way to get rid of acne scars, Darden says that this is not true. Other options include peels, but she recommends her brand of retinol. She says that you will see major improvements in your skin tone if you use it a few nights a week.

You can help your clients stay radiant by providing this advice to them, so they can keep looking their best!
